If you’ve ever had to deal with moths, you know how frustrating it can be, especially if you love natural fibres like wool and cashmere.

These pesky little critters can cause a lot of damage, leaving holes in your favourite clothes and ruining your carpets.

From my own tough experiences and working with many clients, I’ve found some great ways to stop moths from causing havoc in your home.

So, let’s dive into how you can keep your rental property free from moths!

Prevention

Regular Cleaning
Regular vacuuming is essential, not only to keep your home clean but also to disrupt the life cycle of moths. Make sure to move your furniture and vacuum underneath where moth larvae might hide. What might look like carpet could actually be a nest of larvae!

Proper Clothes Storage
Invest in zip-up clothing carriers and vacuum storage bags to protect your delicate items. Moths are particularly fond of wool and can target your most expensive pieces. Ensure that clothes are thoroughly cleaned before storing, as the scent of residual sweat can attract moths.

Ventilation
Proper ventilation is crucial in reducing humidity levels in your home, which can deter moth infestations. Keep your property well-ventilated to alleviate various issues, including moth presence.

Natural Deterrents

Lavender
Moths dislike the scent of lavender. Use lavender sachets in your drawers and consider placing fresh lavender in rooms.

Cedar
Cedar balls can be placed in wardrobes and prone areas. Refresh their scent by sanding them down occasionally.

Moth Traps
Pheromone traps attract and catch moths. Though not aesthetically pleasing, they are effective and last about 10 weeks.

Regular Checks

Frequently inspect your clothes, cupboards, and dark corners. Catching moths early can prevent extensive damage to your home.

When to Call a Professional

If your moth problem becomes unmanageable despite your efforts, it may be time to call in a professional pest controller. A professional can provide:

  • Expert Assessment: Accurate identification of the type and extent of the infestation.
  • Targeted Treatment: Access to advanced treatment options that are more effective than over-the-counter solutions.
  • Prevention Advice: Guidance on preventing future infestations.

I hope this helps and I’d love to hear about your tips and tricks for keeping your property moth free!
